Five of big six energy companies drop green tariffs

Five of the “big six” energy companies have dropped their policies of offering green tariffs to new customers, in a move which green campaigners fear could undermine the national drive to tackle climate change.

Npower announced earlier in July that it was scrapping its domestic green electricity tariff for new customers, while EDF, E.ON, SSE and Scottish Power are also no longer offering a domestic green tariff for those wishing to switch. With all but one of the big six energy companies offering no 100% renewably sourced electricity tariff to new customers, the choice for consumers who are keen to support green electricity has been drastically reduced.

EU-China solar panel anti-dumping talks face fresh flare-up

Efforts by the EU and China to settle a dispute over solar panels have hit an impasse, threatening to reheat simmering tensions between two of the world’s largest trading partners.

After weeks of intense discussions, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, had been hoping to close a deal this week, in which Chinese exporters agree – in lieu of paying punitive tariffs – not to sell their products in the EU below an agreed minimum price.

E Bruno Tani, presidente di Anigas, che con i suoi 13mila addetti e oltre 13milioni di clienti, pesa per il 65% sull’intero comparto, aprendo ieri la 67ma assemblea annuale dell’associazione, rivendica lo sforzo messo in campo dalle aziende e formula un appello chiarissimo al ministro dello Sviluppo economico, Flavio Zanonato, seduto in prima fila. «Le nostre aziende non chiedono soldi. Abbiamo bisogno di regole ben fatte e di strategie definite per sapere che fare, ma su tutto abbiamo bisogno di sapere se investire e dove». Visti anche i 15 miliardi di euro di impegno chiesto alla distribuzione nei prossimi 10 anni.

Japan moves closer to restarting nuclear reactors

Japan has moved a step closer to restarting nuclear reactors, with four utility companies applying for safety inspections of 10 idled plants, the clearest sign of a return to atomic energy almost two and a half years after the Fukushima disaster.

With all but two of the country’s 50 reactors offline since a tsunami swept through the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant in March 2011, Japan has been almost without nuclear energy that once supplied about a third of its power.
