Food producer Mars taps into Moy Wind Farm near Inverness

Food producer Mars has agreed to buy its electricity from a company that generates its power at a 20-turbine wind farm in the Highlands. Eneco UK’s Moy Wind Farm near Tomatin, south of Inverness, should generate the equivalent amount of electricity used by Mars’ 12 UK sites.

Mars, whose brands include Mars Bars, Maltesers, Uncle Ben’s and Whiskas, joins other firms backing renewables.

Power used by Aberdeenshire company Mackie’s is 100% renewable-generated.

The firm makes ice cream and crisps using produce from a farm it runs on the outskirts of Rothienorman, near Inverurie.

Drinks firm Irn-Bru has a wind turbine that contributes to some of its energy needs.

Mars’ 10-year deal with Eneco UK is believed to be the largest of its kind in Scotland.

Barry Parkin, chief sustainability officer for Mars Incorporated, said: “The Moy Wind Farm is part of our innovative and long-term approach to achieving our goal to be a successful and sustainable business for generations to come.

“We’re not there yet, but we recognise all businesses have a responsibility to tackle climate change and we hope our partnership with Eneco at Moy will encourage other companies to take steps to reduce their own carbon footprint through renewable energy.”
